Homework for Jan. 11, 2011

1) Life in Vietnam would be perfect if everyone were totally equal. Do you agree or disagree? Explain your answer in complete sentences.
- Life in Vietnam would not be perfect if everyone were equal, i think so because i don't like the government. They didn't do there job well at keeping the citizens happy, they blocked Facebook and most of the people use it for entertain. If everyone were equal then there would be no one who would go against the government and tell them what the people think. People have the right to make themselves better by working. The government would be very awkward if they don't want their citizen to get better.

2) You are designing a society in which everyone is equal. What are the laws?
- Treat each person equally
- Think like others
- Don't try to be better than anyone else
- If one person is better than others, tell the government
- Anyone who thinks smarter than others, will be reeducated in a camp.
- Every person will be paid equally.
- Same types of shoes, clothes, etc...
- Everyone has the ability to do same things.
- Each person must have a knowledge check every 2 weeks
- Each 2 days the market will change the food to sell, no other food, Citizens must eat same type of food.
- Treat everyone the same.

3) What would you do to help people who were less capable mentally, physically, or socially to “catch up”?
- To teach them extra and the people whose on top will be stopped with the education until everybody catches up.

4) What problems can you foresee that might come in a society with laws that force “equality for all”? How would you handle those problems?
- i can see that people will go against the law and try to make their own law. They will gather as a group that will go against the government. If i am the government then i would stop them by locked everyone in their house, cut their phone line and electricity. 3 meals will get delivered by the government for each home. Maybe i can make some agents go around the city and guard the people well.

5) Do you believe that total equality is possible, or would human nature make sure that some people would eventually dominate others?
- No i don't, because at least some people that are smart will eventually rise up and break the law. Generations after generations will beat the government, it's impossible to make everybody equal. No one is the same, It's impossible.

6) In what situations have you felt similarly to any of the characters? What persons, places, or ideas from your own experience came to mind while you were reading this story? Try to list as least two examples.
- I usually get amnesia like the mother Hazel, she saw and heard that her son got killed by the agent, 5-10 seconds later, she forgot about the thing that was that important. It's like amnesia but a little different because i forget stuff that aren't that big.
- Occasionally, i feel like George, i was thinking about my personal stuff, then a loud noise buzzed in my head and i forgot everything that i was thinking about. It was disturbing when something like that happens.

Advertise Questions

How does advertising influence consumption?
People use reputation of celebrities and what they are really good at to advertise about. We can’t put Ronaldo for computers and Kobe Bryant for soccer shoes. They show the positive side but not the negative side so people would not concern about the bad side. They also use models for clothes and take what is able to fit the advertisement such as Kobe for Nike basketball shoes

Do you think citizens are sufficiently informed about the sustainability of our consumption habits? If not, how can we become more informed about sustainability issues?
No, they should show us the bad side and tell us what if we use it a lot in a day and how would it affect us.

Do you think these advertising techniques influence what you and your friends purchase?
Yes, because most of my friends wear Nike shoes and based on the advertisement, it seems to be like the best and it looks the best. So most of us use the same brand of shoes like each other and maybe same brand of clothes.
